Talking about the weather in Lebanese Arabic | Lesson 7

Nothing is more basic than a conversation about the weather, so learning the Lebanese dialect is not complete if you don’t have the ability to make small talk. In this lesson we will learn how to talk about the weather in Lebanese.

Transcript:

Today I have a headache, so I’m up on the roof to get some fresh air. A little bit polluted, but it’s ok.
Today’s lesson, it’s about the climate [or weather].

Today is Monday the 23rd of April 2012: lyom l tanein tleta w 3ishreen nisein alfein w tna3sh

Today lyom
Is Monday: l tanein
lyom l tanein tleta w 3ishreen nisein
because April means nisein
2012: alfein w tna3sh
lyom l tanein tleta w 3ishreen nisein alfein w tna3sh

Here in Lebanon we have, of course, four seasons:
We have the autumn, l khareef, we have the winter, l sheteh, and we have the spring, l rabee3. Summer, l seif.
So khareef, sheteh, rabee3, seif.

We are now in the spring: ne7na hala2 b fasl l rabee3

we: ne7na
now: hala2
ne7na hala2 b fasl l rabee3
because spring means rabee3
and fasel means season
so ne7na hala2 b fasl l rabee3.

It’s sunny: fi shames

because sun means shames

Not very hot: mesh kteer shob.

so ne7na b fasl l rabee3 fi shames w mesh kteer shob

In the summer we go to the beach: bl seif mn rou7 3al ba7er

In the summer: bl seif
mn rou7 3al ba7er
so bl seif mn rou7 3al ba7er
and even now there are some people who already got tanned because it’s hot enough.

Now the sun is setting: l shames 3am betgheeb

l shames 3am betgheeb

In a few, it will be dark the night will start

The night: l leil

because night, or evening, means leil

Morning: l sobe7

Noon: l doher

so we have, sobe7, doher, and leil.

PS: you can visit Lebanon anytime you like because the weather is never a problem in the winter you can go for skiing, in the summer you can go to the beach.
