1. Crafts & Trades
These are the skilled workers who fix, build, and create things.
- Shoemaker: Kendarjeh (ููุฏุฑุฌู) – The person who fixes or makes shoes.
- Blacksmith / Ironworker: Hedded (ุญุฏุงุฏ) – The person who works with iron.
- Carpenter: Najjar (ูุฌุงุฑ)
- Mechanic: Mรฉcanicien (ู ููุงูุณูุงู) – Works with cars.
- Painter (Walls): Terrash (ุทุฑูุงุด) – Named after the paint material, taresh (ุทุฑุด).
- Tiler: Bellat (ุจููุงุท) – The person who works with tiles, which are called blat (ุจูุงุท).
- Electrician: Kahrabjeh (ููุฑุจุฌู) – From the word for electricity, kahraba (ููุฑุจุง).
- Tailor: Khiyyat (ุฎูุงุท) / Khiyyata (ุฎูุงุทุฉ) (f.)
2. Shopkeepers & Sellers
These are the people you’ll meet when buying everyday goods.
- Grocer: Dikkanjeh (ุฏููุฌู) – This person works in a small grocery store called a Dikken (ุฏูุงู).
- Greengrocer: Khadarjeh (ุฎุถุฑุฌู) – The person who sells vegetables, which are called khodra (ุฎุถุฑุฉ).
- Baker: This has two words:
- Khebbez (ุฎุจุงุฒ) – Bakes bread, which is khebez (ุฎุจุฒ).
- Forran (ูุฑุงู) – Bakes the famous man’ousheh (ู ูููุดุฉ) in an oven, or forn (ูุฑู).
3. Other Professions
Here are a few more common and traditional jobs.
- Gardener: Jnayneteh (ุฌูููุงุชู) – The person who takes care of a garden, or jnayneh (ุฌูููุฉ).
- Hairdresser / Barber: Halla’ (ุญูุงู) / Halla’a (ุญูุงูุฉ) (f.)
- Fortune Teller: Bassara (ุจุตุงุฑุฉ) – Named after the word for vision, Baseera (ุจุตูุฑุฉ).
- Doorman: Natoor (ูุงุทูุฑ) – This comes from the verb “to wait,” byontor (ุจููุทุฑ), because the doorman waits and watches over the building.
